We Tested Our Tornado Plan

Yesterday tornadoes tracked all across our area (southeast Louisiana).

You may have seen the news that the state of Louisiana was hit hard yesterday with tornadoes. The eastern area of New Orleans (we call it New Orleans East) was particularly hard hit. At least one church building experienced heavy damage.

When the alerts came out that we should take shelter, we began putting our tornado plans in place. Yesterday we had our senior adult choir, a cohort of homeschoolers, and our Mother’s Day Out ministry all in progress. In addition, we had all the people who normally work out of our buildings.

It was amazing to see all of those groups finding their proper places and calmly instituting their plan. I was especially grateful to see how well the children and teachers of Mother’s Day Out fared through it all.

In short, our tornado plans worked well.

That reminds us we all need to be prepared for the unexpected and the unknown.

Isn’t it amazing how we all assume that a hurricane or tornado will hit someone else but not us?

We do the same things about our own lives. We say “If I die.”   I am amazed at how the oldest men in our church will say, “I was telling my wife yesterday, ‘if I die’ you should do this.” We act as if we are immortal while everyone else is quite mortal.

Have you put your eternity plan in place? Have you dealt with the fact that something will happen to you? Are you amazed that you have a tornado plan but not a plan to meet God? Have you noticed that when Life threatening emergencies arise our priorities immediately change?

Jesus reminded us that there comes a time when earthly accomplishments will mean little or nothing. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).

I write a devotional each day for Christians across the country. If you would like to receive your own free copy in you inbox each morning, you can sign up in the box below or at waylonbailey.com.
