I hope you had a great Easter. I certainly did.
Let me tell you what we did for Easter.
The most wonderful part and the most exciting was getting to worship with God’s family as we celebrated our Lord’s resurrection from the dead. I got to do that four times. (It was a blessing not a chore).
It was a great time seeing people worshiping and praising God and getting to worship with them.
After our time of worship with God’s family, our small family in Covington spent the afternoon together. It was a wonderful joy.
I have another question for you. What will you do after Easter?
Think about how we do Easter celebrations. We get ready seven weeks before Easter. We build up to a grand celebration. Many people do something special spiritually in the weeks leading up to Easter. Some people fast or have a specific fast (giving up certain foods).
Then, once Easter has come and gone, we are on to something else.
That was never the way Jesus intended. In fact, He planned that Easter would not be the end but only the beginning. In each of His resurrection appearances recorded in the Gospels, He gave specific instructions for those who followed Him.
He gave what we now call the Great Commission. Matthew’s Gospel portrays the clearest representation of what God wants us to do. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20).
The other Gospels tell the followers of Jesus to preach the good news and to take it to the ends of the earth. Jesus called His disciples to be witnesses of the power and work of God.
So now that Easter is over, what are you going to do?
Our Lord wants us to take His example and follow it. He desires that we would be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. He wants us to treat others with love, respect, dignity, and integrity. He desires that what He did for us on the cross would be the impetus for what we do for people around the world.
As He took our place on the cross, may we preach the gospel, encourage repentance, and teach about the forgiveness of sins. Let us be his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Luke 24:44-49).
The most important question may not be what you did at Easter, but what you will do after Easter.
