Why is the world so dark?

When we look around, we see a world that is darkened by sin and writhing in pain.

In America, human life has been cheapened and degraded in so many ways. Children are abused and women are used. The violence in our cities and even in our small towns is sickening. In one of the small towns near me, there was a double murder this week occasioned by domestic pain.

Look at the world and it’s even worse. What makes the world so dark?A look back in history might answer the question. When we talk about the dark ages, what do we mean, and what brought the world out of the dark ages?

While historians might see multiple answers or a convergence of reasons, we can be sure about one reason. One of those events that changed the world – – and maybe the event – – was the translation of the Word of God into a language that could be read by the common people. The Bible was translated in the 1500s and became available to common people in the 1600s. England became a people of the book when Scripture was translated into their own language.

This is one thing we know: The Word of God made a difference in England, America, and the European continent.

What are we missing today?

While the Bible is readily available, it is not eagerly read. No longer is the Bible a staple in the homes of Americans. No longer is the Bible read, promoted, and taught in the schools of America.

If the lack of Scripture kept us in the dark ages, won’t the failure to read, meditate on, and memorize the Word of God keep us in the darkness of our own day?

There are so many things I can’t change, but I can change this. I can let the Word of God become more and more a part of my life and thought. I can hide God’s Word in my heart so that I will not sin against God.
