A Final Look at How You Can Help Your Church

Since Easter I have been preaching a series of sermons concerning “The Future of the Church.” This series has been helpful for me to solidify my thinking about the church. I think it has helped my people to think seriously about who we are and what God has called us to do.

I want to end this series by taking a final look at what we can do to help our church.

You know many things that can make a difference in the church, such as giving, attending, being very faithful, and having a positive attitude. I can assure you that anybody with these attributes will be a blessing to the church they attend. When families like this move away, I grieve. I also usually make sure they know I appreciate what they have done for the church.
But these are not the greatest things you can do for the church. Let me give you a brief list of ways you can be a blessing to your church.

First, pray. Pray fervently and positively that God will bless the church and use it mightily. Please pray believing that God will open doors for the gospel and that He will keep the church from the evil one.

As I’ve often said, there is no substitute for prayer. Prayer is not the least you can do nor is it the last thing you can do. Prayer is the most important thing you can do.

As a pastor, I am tremendously encouraged knowing that there are many people who pray for me by name each day.

Second, seek God with all your heart. Like prayer, there is no substitute for seeking God and desiring to become like Him. This is the goal for every believer. We are to become like Christ in our minds and attitudes and certainly in our actions.

God wants us to draw near to Him, and He wants to draw near to us (James 4:8).
Third, be an example to the other members of the body. What we really learn is not what we hear or read but what we see as an example. Paul told Timothy to be an example to the believers in Godliness (1 Timothy 4:12ff). Godly church members help establish a culture of prayer, Godliness, and obedience. The more we see that in church leaders the more the congregation becomes like the leaders and, most importantly, like Christ.
These things will help the church. They will help you as well.
