Four Thoughts about the Fourth of July

Let me wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July.

I want to give you four quick thoughts about the Fourth of July and the birth of this great nation.

First, we need to give thanks to God for creating us and allowing the residents of the United States of America to live in the freedom we enjoy. As a Christian our constitution is precious to me because it allows me to live according to the dictates of Scripture and the leading of God’s Spirit.

This is an unique right (very few nations have freedom of religion as we enjoy). It is a sacred privilege that must be preserved. We cannot be silent in the midst of an onslaught that would take this right from us.

Second, we need to deeply care about the needs of the people around us. For the most part, I believe that describes America and Americans. According to recent statistics, we are the second most generous people on earth (Myanmar is first). I believe our differences about caring for the needs of others has to do with method much more than belief. For example, should medicaid be for the very poor and unable or for most people regardless of ability to pay?

Most Americans agree with Teddy Roosevelt who stated: “This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.”

I thank God for the generosity of Americans. I saw it firsthand when Hurricane Katrina hit our area.

Third, we must be excellent citizens. This involves obeying laws and making law enforcement an easier task for those who have policing responsibilities. It means paying taxes and respecting those in authority. It means helping to make the nation a better place.

Fourth, we followers of Christ must seek to show the love and care of Christ for us and the people around us. America is wonderful, but it is not the hope of the world.

Christ is our only hope. We must live out that hope in a dark world. We must share God’s grace and goodness and proclaim Him kindly and boldly.

May you have a wonderful day!

  1. Well said, Waylon. We need to bring God back into our schools, government, and our entire nation in order for it to be all it was meant to be when it was founded. Have a safe and Happy Fourth !
