Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Life is filled with decisions.

Decision making starts young, and it never ends. Just yesterday, I asked my grand daughter how she felt about something. She had to think about how she felt and then decide how to communicate her feelings to me.

Also late yesterday, Senator John McCain, a war hero and senator, at age 80 had to decide what kind of treatment to take for a malignant brain tumor. From birth to death, life is filled with decisions.

With all of the decisions we have to make, what do we do to make the best decisions for our future?

Let me give you some basic ideas about decision making.

First, gather as much good information as possible. Generally speaking, the more you know the better decision you will make.

In our technological society, there is plenty of information. The problem is that it’s not all good information.

Second, think and pray through your decision. I always admire people who seem to make good, long term decisions on the spur of the moment, but that is not me. I need time to think and pray. Meditation, “mulling,” and prayer serve me well as I seek to make good decisions.

Third, seek wise counsel. Scripture encourages us to look to the wisdom of many counselors. Solomon showed us the value of many counselors and of seeking wise counsel. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22). Make sure you seek people who don’t normally think as you do.

Fourth, seek God, and seek God’s wisdom and guidance. Many of you know that I love what I call my life verses. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path” (Proverbs 3:5–6).

Notice the emphases of these verses. Trust the Lord. Don’t simply rely on what you know or you can do. Put God at the forefront of everything in your life.

When you have done all of these things, you can be sure that God will direct your path.

Over and over Scripture tells us to seek God’s wisdom and guidance. When we seek him with all our heart, we will find Him. God wants to show us His way, but He wants us to completely and fully depend on Him.

We don’t make good decisions when we are trying to manipulate God. We make good decisions when we allow God to lead us in life.

Finally, don’t rehash the decision once you have made it. If you’ve thought through, prayed, sought good counsel, and sought God, you’ve done enough. Let your mind and your heart rest.

  1. I just copies and saved this one for the next time I’m struggling with a decision and can’t figure out what to do. It’s always because I’ve forgotten to include God in it!
