It’s No Secret

One of my favorite stories is about secrets.

A young boy tried and tried to zip his jacket but couldn’t do so. Finally, his grandmother waited as long as she could and then took charge.

She said, “Here, let me show you the secret.”

She grabbed both sides of the zipper, lined them up, and deftly zipped up the zipper.

The grandson, now exasperated and frustrated, asked the question, “Why does it have to be a secret?”

Here is the truth about all the things of God. God and His ways are not a secret. The Bible is not a secret.

In spite of all of the clever ads, there is no hidden code.

God did not give his Word to hide things; He gave his word to reveal things. The word “revelation” means an unveiling. It’s what you do when you take a cloth from covering a painting or a statue. You uncover it.

That’s what God wants to do in your life. He wants to unveil the truth. He wants to show you the hope that you have in Jesus Christ the Lord.

It’s not a secret. It’s only a mystery.

In the Bible, the word mystery is used often. It usually describes the amazing work which God did by bringing Jew and Gentile together, making them one people in Christ.

You could use the word mystery to describe a number of events in Scripture. It’s a mystery how our salvation is secured by the blood of Christ, but that salvation is open to all. It’s not only for a few. It’s for all.

You could use the word mystery to describe how we who are unrighteous can be made righteous in Christ Jesus, but that righteousness is for all who repent and submit to Jesus.

You could go on and on.

It truly is a mystery, but I thank God it’s not a secret.

It is time for us to tell the story.

How can they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14-17).
