Are You Seeing God Correctly?

When I say “God,” what do you see in your mind?

Very early on, one of my daughters described her view of God. She described Him in this way. He sat on the throne and had long white robes.

That’s fairly typical for most any child, especially one who has been brought up to know and love God.

My daughter gave one other description which made me feel very good. She said as she saw God on the throne, he was smiling.

Unfortunately, that is not the major view of God in this country or around the world.

You may be one of those people who can’t see in your mind a God who “is good and great.”

You may not be able to see a God who smiles.

Let me encourage you to begin seeing God as He truly is. Most of us have been influenced by someone who gave us a picture of God, usually not a good picture of God.

While affirming our families and our pasts, we need to make sure that non-biblical pictures of God do not take precedence in our minds. We need to grow up in our faith and put childish ways behind us.

Let me encourage you to analytically look at the revelation of God in Scripture.

Strong biblical teachers have taught us to look at Jesus for our picture of God. Jesus told us that He came to reveal the Father and that “I and the Father are one.” Therefore, what we see in Jesus is the correct view of God. We must put aside those inadequate views so that we can see God as He truly is.

Let me encourage you to read the Gospel accounts of who Jesus. When you have gotten the gospel view of Jesus, you will then begin to get the proper view of God.

I would suggest you read the Gospel of John and read it with understanding who God is in mind.

I would also suggest that you pray fervently that God would remove those old prejudiced views and replace them with the God of truth.

Nothing in life is as important as your understanding of the nature and character of God.

May God bless you as you seek him.

“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you” (James 4:8).
