What Are We Afraid to Do?

Life is filled – – actually it is overflowing – – with decisions.

We have been making a lot of decisions at my house both in life and with  church. It has seemed lately that the decision-making has gone to a totally new level.

Two weeks ago I left early Monday morning to catch a plane for a meeting I attended in the Atlanta area. In order to get to the New Orleans airport from my house, I travel what has been known as the longest continuous bridge in the world.

We know this bridge as “the causeway.” In fact, I can’t imagine that many people in my area could give you the formal name at all. We all drive “the bridge.”

As I made the trip across the bridge, it suddenly dawned on me that there were no decisions I could make for the next 24 miles. I couldn’t turn left or right. I couldn’t stop. All I had to do was set the cruise control to 65 mph, get in the right lane, and drive. It was wonderful.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that decisions are not bad. In fact, decisions are wonderful.

The joys of life come from decisions. Most of life’s joys come from the scary decisions.

Think about all the things you fear that you wouldn’t miss for anything in the world.

Think about learning to ride a bicycle, learning to swim, learning to downhill ski or water ski.

But, it gets even better. Think about making the decision of who you will marry and live with for a lifetime. Think about the wonderful decision a woman makes to become pregnant, go through the months of discomfort, and then the actual process of giving birth.

A decision based on fear would mean no babies, but a woman’s decision to overcome the fear means unbounded joy.

As a pastor, I have the wonderful privilege of seeing many people who struggle with commitment finally surrender to Christ. For many of these people the number one question is,”Why did I wait so long?”

Joshua challenged the people of Israel to “choose this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15).

What decision with the potential to bring joy and meaning to your life are you putting off?

  1. I heard a pastor say that he’d witnessed many people struggle through all types of decision making.
He said he has never heard one say “I sure wish I hadn’t made the decision to believe in Jesus!”.
Thank you for continuing to share on your blog with focus and purpose.
    Love you & Martha!

  2. As someone who drives 500-600 miles a day, every day, you have captured my thoughts. My truck is governed at 65 MPH so I don’t even have to think about “should I go faster to be there on time for delivery”. I run my schedule by the day not the hour for no more than 70 hours in 8 days and no more than 11 hours a day. My stress level since leaving road building has dropped to nothing except preservation of the lives of myself and the people around me doing stupid with zeros.
