Why Good Things Happen with the Church

I’ve spent most of my adult life in churches and in a seminary preparing ministers to work in the local church. I’ve always been interested in what makes churches tick. I’ve always wanted to know why good things happen at church.

All of this comes to mind today because on Sunday we had really good things happen at church.

Our local church has been going through some significant changes. We have opened a new preschool and children’s building and moved all of our adult classes. At the same time, we have moved from three worship services to two worship services and changed when they meet.

If you attend church regularly and love the local body of believers, you know these are not easy changes. Yet, we had a really good day Sunday.

Why is it that good things happen at church?

First, the church is blessed when everyone wants the church to do well. By that I mean that the responsibility for the local church doing well depends on the people of the church. If God’s people join together with a common goal and with right motives, it is hard for good things not to happen at church.

Second, good things happen when people pray and seek God’s leadership and God’s blessings. I am always thrilled and amazed to see the blessings of God when people pray. Paul constantly urged the church to pray and Peter told us to cast all our cares upon our caring God.

Third, good things happen when the church is well led and well prepared.

I watched with amazement as our pastors and volunteer leaders in the church made good plans and then instituted those plans.

God gives leadership to the church. He expects leaders to lead, and He expects all of us to be good followers.

Fourth, good things happen when we have good examples. The best way to learn is to watch what other people do. Paul boldly told the churches to do what he had shown by his example, “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).

Finally, good things happen at church when we give God the praise and glory and thank Him for His goodness. How easy it is to take the glory for ourselves instead of magnifying and glorifying the God of heaven.

We must be thankful in all things. It’s amazing what can be done when people don’t care who gets the credit.
