Comfort Food for the Soul

Every now and then I just need some comfort food. You probably know the feeling. I start looking for hamburgers and fries or fried chicken. Fortunately, that doesn’t happen often.

While I don’t get comfort food often, I desperately need food for my soul.

I find that comfort in the Word of God.

Let me give you one of the most comforting verses of Scripture.

“When the Lord takes pleasure in anyone’s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them.”

Think of the significance of these words. When our ways please God, He brings such peace in our lives that even our enemies live at peace with us. That is comforting to me. It gives peace and joy.

How do we please God? What does God want?

When we look at Scripture, we find holiness is prominent. God wants us to be like Him and to follow in His ways. He wants us to be holy as He is holy.

God wants justice and righteousness. Where holiness deals with our inward being, justice and righteousness affect how we treat others. God wants our ways to be right with Him and right with others. God wants us to have a right and close relationship with Him. The prophet Micah described the desire of God in this way.

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

What comfort to know that God wants us to be like Him, to act justly and to love mercy and kindness, and to walk humbly with Him. The person who does these things will be blessed of God. Even his enemies will live at peace with him.

What comfort and blessing!
