What You Can Do With Your Grief

As a follower of Christ, what should I do with my grief? After all, I don’t want my grief to go to waste. I want my grief–even my grief–to be used for His glory.

God’s Word speaks a powerful word about grief. God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. “He comforts us in all our afflictions, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

I see this happening all the time. I know people who have experienced unspeakable grief who reach out to those who grieve and mourn. Often, these are people who can say, “I have experienced something similar to what you have experienced.” Rarely do they say, “I know how you feel,” but they do say, “I have experience with your kind of grief.” These are people who can bless those who grieve by showing them they can continue to function in the world in spite of their grief.

Paul wanted his readers to share their grief and to share God’s comfort. Paul’s hope was firm, knowing that “as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:7).

Because Paul had suffered greatly, He knew that God is faithful to care for those in need. God works through us to comfort those in need.

As we inevitably share in the sufferings of this world, let us also help others who suffer as well.

  1. Waylon, this message is so true, my 13 year old neice took her life two years ago, i had friends who had lost loved ones through suicide but i never knew how they felt. I now know the grief of losing a loved one so young and full of life. Each day i get up and greet the day God has given me knowing my sweet peyton is in heaven and one day i will see her again

This verse along with Isaiah 49:15-16 have given me strength and wisdom since my first brain tumor in 1987.
