As the Heart Goes . . .

Jesus spoke clearly and authoritatively about the problems of rebellion, selfishness, and sin in our lives. He stated emphatically that sin comes from the heart. The heart was Jesus’ way of speaking about our inward being, which encompasses body, mind, and spirit.

Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders,  adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man . . .” (Matthew 15:19-20).

With this as a background, the statement of Jesus concerning cutting off a hand or a foot or plucking out an eye that causes you to sin makes really good sense (Matthew 18).

What was he trying to tell us?

First, right living and shunning wickedness don’t just happen. They are intentional on the part of the believer who takes decisive action to overcome his propensity towards sin and rebellion.

Thus, you must take charge of your life before God.

This is why Jesus spoke with such graphic words. That which Offends us and leads us away from God must be dealt with quickly and decisively.

Second, to deal with your sin problem, you must first deal with your heart problem. This means opening your heart and submitting to the ways of God. You must become as a little child in obedience and submission.
Finally, we must let God in our lives. For too long, we have tried to handle our hurts and rebellions on our own. It is time to draw near to God (James 4:8).

Here is the really good news. You are not alone. God sent His Son and bestowed His Spirit that you might live with Him. While you don’t have all the resources you need to handle the sin problem, God has everything you need.

Turn to Him, and trust Him with all your heart.
