Suggestion for a Lazy Saturday

I have a suggestion for your Saturday. Since most people do something different on Saturdays, I have a suggestion for something new and different. Saturday is one of my workdays, but I still take the beginning of the day a little slower. Maybe you do the same.

Here is my suggestion for what you might do on this day.

Let me suggest that you read Psalm 119. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in Scripture. It’s made up of 176 versus which in some way or the other all talk about God‘s Word. It’s a delightful passage that helps you think seriously about how God speaks to us and what God wants to communicate to us.

The entire chapter is fascinating in how it is put together. It is made up of 22 strophes or individual stanzas. It’s an alphabetical acrostic. Each strophe is made up of eight verses, equaling the total of 176.

In each strophe, every verse begins with the same letter of the Hebrew alphabet, beginning with Aleph and ending with Tau. Each strophe is constructed identically. Of course, as you would expect, this arrangement does not carry over into English translations.

Another thing you might do on a Saturday is to memorize one or more verses from Psalm 119. Just to let you know how possible this is, I have a friend who has memorized all of psalm 119. It takes him more than 20 minutes to recite the entire passage!

Here are some verses I would recommend you to memorize.

First, Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.”

Second, Psalm 119:45, “And I will walk at liberty (literally, in a wide place), for I seek thy precepts.”

Third, Psalm 119:11. “Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.”

By doing this, you’ll be doing exactly what the psalm encourages us do in hiding God’s word in our hearts. Treasuring God’s Word in your heart will help keep you from sin.

May God bless you on this wonderful day He has given to us.

  1. This brought back memories from Bible School in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Psalm 119:11 and Psalm 119:105 were verses we all memorized during Bible School. Every morning during our assembly we said these verses together.

  2. That is wonderful! I once had a friend who could recite the whole book of John.
It is amazing what good connection some people have in their gray matter. It is wonderful how much love some people have for The Lord Jesus.

  3. There are six keywords repeated throughout this Psalm: commandments, precepts, testimonies, statutes, judgments, and law.
Law – all the rule of conduct established and enforced by the authority.
Commandments – an authoritative command or order.
Precepts- a commandment or direction meant as a rule of action or conduct.
    Testimonies- any affirmation or declaration.
Statutes- an established rule or formal regulation.
Judgments- the act of judging or deciding.
All these definitions are from Webster’s Dictionary
There is an interesting word in the definition of law and that is Authority.
Authority – The power or right to give commands, enforce obedience, take action, or make final decisions.
God is the ultimate authorityand we need to remember that as we go through the week.
