The Chicken Little Complex

Do you remember Chicken Little? I am mean Chicken Little of “The sky is falling!” fame.

It’s easy to be a Chicken Little. Life can get us down. From what’s happening in the country to our own personal problems, life can become overwhelming. I certainly feel that way sometimes, but that’s not reality and it doesn’t help me when I feel that way.

What should you do to get rid of the “Chicken Little“ complex?

Here are four things I suggest.

First, remember that God is still God. He is in control, and He is good, loving, and kind. He has your best interest at heart.

I try to remember that the God who has always been with me in the past will be with me in the future. As the hymn says, He is “Our help in ages past, our hope for years to come.”

Second, surround yourself with positive, upbeat people who will speak truth into your life. We all have negative friends, but we can’t let them be the dominant voice in our lives. Those negative friends will take us down with them. Find people who will encourage and bless you.

Third, start your day with God and emphasize His presence in your life. I’ve forgotten the preacher’s name from a couple of hundred years ago but I’ve never forgotten what he said. His words have power, “the first order of the day is to spend time with God and to get my soul happy in the Lord.“

When I spend time with God and let his words flow over my heart, I find my soul happy in the Lord.

Fourth, meditate on God‘s eternal word. Look for verses like these, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee“ (Psalm 56:3) or ” ‘No weapon formed against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord’ ” (Isaiah 54:17).

Don’t be a Chicken Little. God is in control. He is our Lord and our master. Rejoice in Him.

  1. Waylon, Thank you for your inspired suggestions. If Chicken Little comes pecking at my door, I will ask Jesus to answer. Then the Lord and I will sit down for a chicken stew dinner.
