It’s What Comes Later That Counts

In almost everything, it’s what comes after that really counts.

For example, think about a marriage. Standing before God, the church, and family and friends is essential, but if there is nothing to follow in terms of commitment, sacrifice, and faithfulness, it will not endure for the long haul.

Think about taking a new job. The job interview is absolutely important, but it is doing the work and carrying out assignments that makes for a long term success.

Think about your relationship with God. Jesus talked about those who proclaimed, “Lord, Lord,” but did not do the will of the Father in heaven. It’s what comes after the proclamation that counts. As I have often said about preaching, “Anyone can talk, but it’s living lives devoted to God that counts.”

We love the Christmas story, but we love it because of what came afterward. It was Jesus’ sinless life and devoted ministry that made the difference. Had it not been for Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we would certainly not know the story of His birth.

What comes after matters with us as well. You and I can’t go back and change the past, but we can make what comes after count for God. We can’t “do over” any part of our lives, but we can “do” today what matters to God.

We can’t change yesterday, but by the grace and power of God we can make today a day that pleases the Lord and blesses other people.
