Having A Christmas Of Significance

We get caught up in giving and receiving, enjoying and going, doing and planning at Christmas. What we really need is a Christmas of significance–a Christmas that truly can be remembered.

What would a Christmas of significance look like?

If we look at Matthew 2, we find the visit by the wise men and the visitation by the Angel of God. This is what their “Christmas of Significance” resembled.

First, they intentionally and intently sought God’s work in their lives. They saw the star in the east and sought to understand what God was doing in the world. They made the months long trip to find the child and to worship. Our seeking after God would be to understand His written word and to receive God’s special revelation for us.

Second, they worshiped God by giving gifts. For them the gifts were gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh. Can we really worship God without giving? Wouldn’t a Christmas of significance include gifts to take the Gospel to the world? Wouldn’t it include caring for local people in need?

Let me give you three specific ways that you can still give for a Christmas of significance. In my local church, these are prominent ways to make a difference at Christmas. (1) The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, (2) The Covington Rotary Club for meals to be distributed on Christmas Day, (3) The benevolence fund of FBC to be taken on Christmas Eve. All of these offerings will be used to bless people without the Gospel internationally and people with financial needs locally.

While the opportunities where you worship might be different, you will certainly have ways to worship by giving gifts. As I look around the country, I find that churches get a bad rap for turning inward and not being concerned about the needs of the poor and hurting. I find most churches and church people ready to make a difference. I hope you will be one of those people.

Third, they listened to the direction of God. When God warned them in a dream not to return to Jerusalem to tell King Herod about the child, they obeyed God. They had a divine appointment, and they followed that appointment. Is anything more important than hearing from God?

Does the way you do Christmas open your heart to God or does it make your heart dull? A Christmas of significance would certainly involve hearing God’s voice and doing God’s will.

What kind of Christmas will you have?
