Playboy and Pornography

Last week Playboy Magazine made what seemed to be a startling announcement. Beginning immediately Playboy determined no longer to feature or print the photos of nude women.

Has Playboy changed? Did it all of a sudden come to terms with all of the havoc it has played in society? Did the company decide to be a responsible part of society?

No, it was merely a business decision. Playboy recognized that pornography is abundantly prevalent across the Internet.

Here’s what they said in the press release: “That battle has been fought and won. You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free.”

Playboy certainly is right about it’s judgment about pornography in America and around the world. It is rampant.

Very often – – too often – – I deal with a couple devastated by pornography. Mostly, it’s men, but
it’s also women.

What can we do about the scourge of pornography?

First, we can go back to a standard which works. The sexual revolution of the 1960s created a culture and society that is unsustainable. Marriage and family is at the heart of God’s creation.

Marriages and families desperately need the teaching of Scripture about fornication, adultery, and lust. We must go back to the Biblical standard which supports an orderly society.

Second, we as individuals must seek to live as an example to others. We must “abstain from immorality” (1 Thessalonians 4:3) and live as such that “immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints” (Ephesians 5:3). This is a daunting task, a task of monumental proportions. It is such a difficult task because of how advanced our immorality is.

Third, we must share with others the transforming power of the gospel.

God makes new people of the old person. He transforms and renews.

Fourth, we must help those who are struggling. We must be prayer warriors, encouragers, and counselors for families and individuals who are buried under the hurt, shame, and pain of pornography.

Finally, we must prepare our young men with positive ways to live pure lives. We must place this challenge of Godly living before them.

It is a huge task, but our God is able.
